H. Upmann By Aj Fernandez Toro

The H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez Toro puts one of the oldest names in cigars (founded 1844) in the hands of Nicaragua's most prolific modern blender — and the partnership works. This 6 × 54 toro is handmade at AJ Fernandez's factory with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper over aged Nicaraguan binder and filler grown on AJ's own farms.

Construction

A reddish-brown Sumatra wrapper with a clean roll and slight sheen. Cold draw brings cedar and dark chocolate. AJ's factory turns out remarkably consistent cigars: expect an even burn, solid ash, and a smooth draw for the full smoke.

Flavor profile

Medium to full-bodied and modern. The first third opens with espresso, cedar, and a peppery spice. The middle third rounds into dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and a developing caramel sweetness. The final third closes with earth and warm baking spice. More body than the classic Dominican H. Upmanns — this is the heritage name with a Nicaraguan engine. A 60–75 minute smoke.

Pairings & occasion

An evening cigar with broad pairing range. Pair with bourbon (Woodford Reserve, Four Roses), an aged rum, a porter, or espresso. A great pick when you want full flavor with a storied band on it.
