Padron 1926 No. 48 Maduro

The Padron 1926 No. 48 Maduro is part of the line that effectively defined what modern Nicaraguan luxury cigars are. The 1926 Anniversary Series was released to commemorate José Padron's 75th birthday — he was born in 1926 — and the Maduro version, with its dark, oily, sun-grown wrapper, has been on every "best cigars in the world" list for two decades. The Padron 1926 No. 9 Maduro was famously named Cigar Aficionado's #1 cigar of 2004, and the entire 1926 line continues to score 92+ points consistently. The No. 48 is a 5½ × 50 box-pressed robusto — the size many Padron loyalists consider the sweet spot of the entire line.

What's in it

Five years of aged Nicaraguan tobacco — long-filler, hand-selected, hand-rolled at the Padron factory in Estelí. The Maduro wrapper is sun-grown Nicaraguan habano leaf, fermented longer than the Natural variant, which is what creates that signature dark sheen and concentrated flavor. The box-press is firm and square-shouldered, giving you that distinctive chew at the cap.

Flavor profile

This is a medium-full to full-bodied cigar — much more assertive than the Damaso. From the first draw, expect rich espresso and dark chocolate up front, with a backbone of black pepper that builds without overwhelming. The middle third opens into leather, dried fruit (think raisin and fig), and a touch of cocoa nib. The final third deepens — the chocolate turns bittersweet, the spice settles into the finish, and there's an earthy, almost charred-oak quality on the retrohale.

The construction is what makes this cigar legendary: the draw is perfect every time, the burn line stays razor-sharp without touch-ups, and the ash holds in inch-and-a-half chunks. That's what 60+ years of Padron quality control gets you.

Pairings & occasion

This is an evening cigar. Pair it with a peated Scotch (Lagavulin 16, Talisker 10), an aged rum (Diplomatico Reserva), or a strong espresso. Skip wine — this cigar has too much going on. If you're new to full-bodied cigars, eat dinner first.
