Padron 1926 Series 40th Anniversary Maduro

The Padron 1926 Serie 40th Anniversary Maduro is, by most measures, the most decorated cigar of the modern era. Released in 2004 to commemorate José Padron's 40 years of cigar making, the Maduro version was named Cigar Aficionado's #2 cigar of 2004 — and the entire 40th Anniversary line has scored consistently in the 95+ range across publications for two decades. If a cigar deserves the description "instant classic," this is it.

This is a 6½ × 54 box-pressed toro — the exclusive size for the 40th Anniversary line. Each cigar is individually numbered, hand-rolled at Padron's Estelí factory using long-filler tobacco aged a minimum of five years. Production is limited annually, which is why availability fluctuates and why prices stay where they are.

Construction

This is what reference-grade construction looks like. The Maduro wrapper is dark, oily, and seamlessly applied — sun-grown Nicaraguan habano fermented longer than the Natural variant, which creates the signature lacquered sheen. The box-press is firm and squared. Pre-light cold notes pull cocoa and a touch of leather. The burn line is razor-sharp through the entire smoke, the ash holds in solid inch-plus segments, and the draw never tightens. Six decades of Padron quality control on display in every cigar.

Flavor profile

Medium-full to full bodied — distinctly more intense than the Natural variant. The first third opens with rich cocoa, espresso, and a backbone of black pepper that announces itself early. The middle third deepens — bittersweet chocolate, dried fruit (think raisin and fig), leather, and a developing earthy character that gives the smoke real weight. The final third is the Maduro's payoff: charred oak, espresso bean, a touch of cedar emerging beneath the dark sweetness, and a peppery finish that lingers between draws.

The retrohale is rich without being harsh — concentrated chocolate and a quiet pepper. This is what aged Maduro tobacco tastes like at the absolute top of the form.
