Padron 1926 Series No.9 Natural

The Padron 1926 Serie No. 9 Natural is the same legendary vitola as the 2007 Cigar of the Year — a 5¼ × 56 box-pressed robusto gordo — dressed in the line's sun-grown Nicaraguan habano wrapper instead of the dark Maduro. Fermented less aggressively, the Natural trades the Maduro's dessert-like sweetness for a more refined, woody complexity that many longtime Padron smokers actually prefer. Hand-rolled in Estelí from long-filler tobaccos aged a minimum of five years.

Construction

The box-press is firm and cleanly squared, the wrapper smooth with a fine grain. Cold draw brings cedar and almonds. Expect the construction the 1926 line is famous for: an even burn with no touch-ups, dense stacking ash, and a perfect draw from light to nub.

Flavor profile

Full-bodied but composed. The first third opens with cedar, white pepper, and toasted almond. The middle third broadens into cream, cocoa powder, and warm bread notes. The final third finishes on espresso and seasoned oak with the pepper sharpening pleasantly. The retrohale is clean and nutty. A 60–75 minute smoke that rewards a slow pace — push it and you flatten the transitions.

Pairings & occasion

A weekend afternoon or refined after-dinner smoke. Pair with a quality bourbon (Eagle Rare 10, Woodford Reserve), an aged rum, or strong black coffee. Skip the heavy peated Scotch — save that for the Maduro version of this cigar.
