Padron 1964 Anniversary Principe Natural

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Principe Natural is the cigar to reach for when you want the full Padron experience but only have 30 to 45 minutes. It's the smallest vitola in the 1964 Anniversary line — a 4½ × 46 box-pressed petit corona — and it punches well above its weight class. The 1964 Anniversary line was released to commemorate Padron's 30th anniversary in 1994, and it's been a benchmark for medium-full Nicaraguan cigars ever since.

This is the Natural wrapper version, which uses sun-grown Nicaraguan habano leaf with a slightly lighter, more refined character than its Maduro counterpart. Both share the same hand-rolled long-filler aged for a minimum of four years.

Construction

Don't let the smaller size fool you — the construction is identical to the larger 1964s. Box-pressed firmly, sharp burn line, ash holds well, draw is consistent from light to nub. Pre-light cold notes pull cedar and a touch of sweet hay. The cap cuts cleanly with a straight or punch cutter — a punch works particularly well at this ring gauge.

Flavor profile

Medium-bodied, full-flavored. The first third opens with cedar, cream, and a soft pepper that settles quickly into the background. The middle third deepens — toasted almond and a creamy cocoa note develop, with a gentle coffee finish that lingers between draws. The final third is where the Natural really shines — sweet cedar, light caramel, and a subtle nuttiness that holds all the way to the band.

The smoke time is what makes this cigar special. In 30 to 45 minutes, you get every flavor transition that the bigger 1964s deliver in 75 to 90. It's the Padron quality without the time commitment.

Pairings & occasion

This is a midday cigar — a coffee-break smoke, an after-lunch break, or the cigar you reach for when you want something proper but you don't have the afternoon. Pair with a strong espresso, a glass of bourbon (Buffalo Trace, Maker's Mark), or a quality black tea. Don't waste a 25-year Scotch on it — the smoke time is too short to do justice to the pairing.
