Tatuaje Gran Cojonu

The Tatuaje Gran Cojonu is one of Pete Johnson's most uncompromising blends — a full-bodied, all-Nicaraguan double toro that takes everything the Tatuaje brand stands for and turns the volume up. The "Cojonu" name is Spanish slang for boldness (we'll let you translate it more literally), and the Gran format pushes that already-bold blend into a 6½ × 60 double toro that delivers a 90-to-120-minute smoke of pure flavor intensity.

This is rolled at the My Father Cigars factory in Estelí, Nicaragua — Don Pepin García's operation, widely regarded as one of the finest premium cigar factories in the world. The wrapper is a Nicaraguan Habano sun-grown leaf, with binder and filler from Nicaragua's most respected growing regions. Everything in this cigar is Nicaraguan, and every leaf is aged before rolling.

Construction

Don Pepin's factory has a reputation for impeccable rolling, and the Gran Cojonu is no exception. At 60 ring gauge, draw calibration is critical — too tight at this size and the cigar becomes work; too open and it burns hot. The Gran Cojonu sits in the perfect middle. Pre-light cold notes pull cedar, pepper, and a deep earth. Once lit, the burn line stays sharp throughout the entire smoke, and the ash holds in solid 1.5-to-2-inch segments.

Flavor profile

Full bodied, full strength. This is not a beginner cigar. The first third opens hot and immediate — bold black pepper, cedar, and a defined espresso bitterness. The middle third broadens — bittersweet chocolate, leather, charred oak, and a developing earthiness that gives the smoke serious weight. The final third is the Cojonu's payoff — rich dark coffee, a touch of dried fruit beneath the pepper, and a warm spicy finish that lingers between draws and on the retrohale.

The 60 ring gauge produces a dense, voluminous smoke that fills the room. Eat first — this cigar deserves your full attention and an empty palate to navigate.

Pairings & occasion

This is an evening cigar — pair it with the biggest spirits you have. Peated Scotch (Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10), high-proof bourbon (Booker's, Stagg Jr.), aged rum (Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva), or a strong dark espresso. Light wines and beers will get steamrolled — bring out the heavyweights.
